The Old City Jail in Charleston stands as one of America’s most haunted buildings, with a dark history spanning nearly 200 years. From 1802 to 1939, this imposing structure housed Charleston’s most dangerous criminals, including pirates, murderers, and Civil War prisoners.

A History Written in Blood

Over 10,000 people died within these walls from disease, torture, and execution. The jail housed infamous inmates including:

The Lavinia Fisher Connection

Lavinia Fisher, hanged at the jail in 1820, is said to be the most active spirit. Wearing her wedding dress to her execution, she cursed the crowd, and many believe her vengeful spirit still haunts the upper floors. Male visitors especially report feeling unwelcome in certain areas.

Investigation Findings

Our team has documented extreme EMF spikes, captured clear EVPs of multiple voices, and experienced physical contact. One investigator was scratched while alone in Lavinia’s cell area. The jail remains one of our most active investigation sites.
