Poogan’s Porch isn’t just one of Charleston’s most beloved restaurants—it’s also one of its most haunted. This Victorian townhouse, built in 1888, serves Southern cuisine with a side of supernatural activity.
The Story of Zoe
The restaurant’s most famous ghost is Zoe St. Amand, a former resident who lived in the house until her death in 1954. Lonely and heartbroken after her sister’s death, Zoe spent her final years waving at strangers from her porch, desperately seeking human connection.
Paranormal Activity
Staff and guests regularly experience:
- Zoe’s apparition in a black dress on the staircase
- Doors opening and closing on their own
- Place settings being rearranged
- The sensation of being watched from the upstairs windows
- Unexplained footsteps on the second floor
- Objects moving or disappearing
Poogan the Dog
The restaurant is named after Poogan, a West Highland Terrier who greeted guests for years. Staff report seeing a small white dog that vanishes when approached, and some guests feel a dog brush against their legs during dinner.
Our Experience
During our after-hours investigation, we captured EVPs of a woman saying ‘hello’ and ‘please stay.’ Temperature readings showed dramatic fluctuations near the staircase where Zoe is most often seen. The restaurant’s welcoming atmosphere during the day transforms into something more melancholic after dark.
